Step Up To Aid Tornado Victims
As a kid growing up in Kansas, tornadoes were simply an accepted fact of life.

My hometown of Pittsburg, population 18,000, is nestled in the southeast corner of the state – about 30 miles from both Joplin, MO. and the Oklahoma state border.  In other words, it’s located in the center of “tornado alley.”

Everyone who lives in this geographic region knows tornadoes are dangerous wonders of nature that can swirl into town at a moment’s notice. At an early age you learn to read the sky, memorize the locations of public storm shelters, and to monitor weather news.

At school we routinely had timed tornado drills where everyone evacuated as quickly as possible into the basement. Over dinner our family discussed safety procedures at home: where to shelter, who was responsible for grabbing the portable radio, who got the dog.
